Ali Carter Fires Season’s 10th 147 Break in Dramatic Defeat to Aaron Hill

Ali Carter produced a brilliant maximum 147 break during his English Open match against Aaron Hill on Wednesday, though it wasn't enough to prevent a 4-3 defeat.

This marks Carter’s fourth career maximum and the tenth of the current season—already approaching last year’s full-season record of 15.

Carter’s perfect break came in the fourth frame, helping him take a 3-1 lead after earlier runs of 118 and 77. However, Hill staged a impressive comeback, taking the next three frames to secure victory.

Hill, who had made his first career 147 earlier in the same tournament, held his nerve after Carter’s stunning moment.

“When he made the maximum I thought he would be full of adrenaline, so I said to myself this could be my chance to nick it,” Hill said after the match.

The English Open also saw several other surprises, as former champions Neil Robertson and Zhao Xintong were eliminated by Jackson Page and Jack Lisowski, respectively. Meanwhile, Judd Trump, Mark Selby, and Ding Junhui all advanced to the last 16.

The 2025/26 season is on pace to shatter the record for most 147 breaks, with ten already compiled—a truly remarkable rate.
