Thepchaiya Un-Nooh Crafts Historic Back-to-Back 147s, Eyes Triple Crown Redemption After Wuhan Masterclass

In a display of break-building brilliance, Thai snooker star Thepchaiya Un-Nooh compiled his second maximum 147 break in as many tournaments during the Wuhan Open on Monday, though he was quick to jest about its timing—missing out on a staggering £147, bonus reserved for Triple Crown events.

The thrilling moment came in the final frame of his 5-1 victory over China’s Pang Junxu, sealing not only his place in the last 32 but also his sixth official career maximum. This achievement brings the season’s 147 tally to seven, rapidly approaching the all-time single-season record of 15, set just a few years ago.

“I should have made it at the Triple Crown,” laughed Un-Nooh in his post-match interview. “It would have been nice to get that £147,000.” He was referring to World Snooker’s lucrative bonus for players who make two maximums within the Triple Crown series—a feat recently accomplished by Ronnie O’Sullivan in Saudi Arabia.

Despite the light-hearted regret, Un-Nooh expressed pride in registering the 147th officially recognized 147 break on a Star table, adding, “It’s something special to be remembered by.” He revealed that intense practice sessions upon arriving in Wuhan had built his confidence, with two maximums already notched in practice drills.

Elsewhere, World No. 1 Judd Trump delivered a strong performance with two century breaks in a 5-1 win over Liu Hongyu. Reigning World Champion Zhao Xintong also advanced, though he was pushed to a decider in a hard-fought 5-3 victory against Matthew Stevens.

The day was not without surprises, however. World No. 2 Kyren Wilson suffered a 5-2 defeat to Ireland’s Aaron Hill, who fired in a break of 124 among other solid contributions. Chinese favorite Ding Junhui also bowed out, losing 5-3 to 17-year-old sensation Stan Moody.

The remaining field includes heavyweights such as Mark Selby, John Higgins, and Mark Allen, all vying for the title in what is the third ranking event of the 2025/26 snooker season.

The last 32 matches are set to take place on Tuesday, with Un-Nooh slated to meet Scott Donaldson as he continues his pursuit of a maiden ranking title this season.
